Morning routines move quickly, but an eye contour mask still needs a little care. Apply it without pulling the skin, respect the recommended wear time and remove it as instructed. Patches, rinse-off masks and gels that leave a film on the skin each have their own method.
Before opening the sachet, check how much time you have. If you need to leave for work soon, use the patches another day rather than applying them in a rush, repositioning them several times and removing them quickly in front of the mirror.
Check where the product should be applied
The word “mask” does not tell you exactly where a product belongs. Check that it is intended for the eye contour, then look at the placement diagram.
A face mask is not necessarily suitable for this delicate area. Do not cut its fabric to place it under the eyes, and do not spread a face formula up to the lashes. Even with an eye contour product, stay within the areas indicated by the manufacturer.
Our article on specific eye contour care can help you choose a format. For application, follow the instructions supplied with your product. Guidance for another brand or another mask is not a substitute.
Prepare your skin
Wash your hands and clean your face. Keep the instructions nearby and place the sachet on a clean surface. A bin within reach is useful when you need to discard the patches without searching for one.
If the instructions call for clean, dry skin, do not apply the mask over moisturiser or concealer. There is no need to add serum beneath the patches just because it is part of your morning routine.
Our guide to skincare layering can help you organise the rest of your routine. The instructions for your mask or film-forming treatment always come first, even when they differ from this general order.
Apply patches without pulling the skin
Stand in front of a mirror with both hands free. Remove the patch and any protective backing as shown on the packaging. Check its orientation before bringing it close to your face, as placement varies between formats.
Place it on the indicated area without pulling the skin towards the temple to “smooth” the under-eye area. Adjust it with your fingertips and light pressure. Rubbing will not make it stick better.
If the patch is misplaced, gently lift it and reposition it rather than sliding it across the skin. Do not try to move it a few millimetres closer to the eye. Follow the manufacturer’s diagram and precautions.
A patch that moves will not stay in place better if you press harder. Check that your skin was prepared correctly and that the patch is facing the right way. Remove it if you cannot position it properly.
Follow the recommended wear time
Wear time depends on the product, whether it is an infused patch, a rinse-off mask or another format. Do not shorten it at random because you are in a hurry, but do not leave the mask on throughout breakfast either.
Set a timer as soon as you begin applying the product. If the instructions specify a minimum and maximum time, stay within that range. Do not wait for the backing to dry before removing it unless the manufacturer specifically tells you to.
If the instructions are missing or unreadable, contact the brand before using the product. The recommended time for a similar-looking mask is not enough.
If you are short on time, keep the sachet closed and use it another day. If you feel burning or irritation, remove the product before the timer ends and follow the precautions on the packaging.
Remove the mask gently and check whether rinsing is required
Grip an accessible edge of the patch and peel it away gradually, without pulling sharply downwards or towards the temple. For a rinse-off mask, use the stated removal method instead of rubbing with a towel.
Remove any product left on the skin by spreading or rinsing it according to the instructions. Do not leave it in place or wipe it away out of habit. If it can be spread, use light movements without pressing or massaging firmly.
You can then return to the products that are compatible with the mask’s instructions. Our article on daily hydration offers guidance for your usual routine. After using a mask, there is no need to add several layers.
Instant lifting gel: a film that stays in place
Instant lifting gel is another option for the eye contour, but it is not a mask. According to the official product information, it dries within a few minutes and is removed during makeup removal. You do not need to remove it after a set wear time as you would a patch.
The product information recommends using a small amount, equivalent to one grain of rice for each area. For dry to very dry skin, it specifies applying a rich moisturising cream 30 minutes before the gel. This waiting time applies only to this product, not to eye contour masks.
After applying the gel, only powder makeup products are allowed. Liquid foundations, concealers and liquid or creamy correctors may damage the film. The product information therefore recommends keeping them off the treated area.
It also states that a slight white film may appear on darker skin tones and that the film may look less even on dry skin.
To make your morning easier, check the instructions for the product you plan to use. Set a timer when a wear time is required, and choose makeup that is compatible when the film is designed to remain in place.
